One of five Illustrations commissioned by New Scientist magazine for their cover feature on Dark Matter/Energy. 5% of the matter in the universe is visible to us, hence the small spot of colour in each image, the rest is in the form of invisible 'dark' matter whose effect we can see only indirectly.
